Linux

  • Distrowatch.com - A site dedicated to the tracking of linux distributions and their releases. A great place to start checking out whats available

Security

  • Extended Password Generator (EPG) - A great and small tool to create passwords. Special feature: creates pronouncable passwords
  • Keepass - A utility to store your various passwords in an encrypted file. The program is multiplatfor, so you can access your passwords on both windows and 'nix systems. Also has a portable version which can be carried on a pendrive and used around campus
  • Truecrypt - A brilliant program for creating encrpyted files and performing full disk encryption
  • Security Now Podcast - A look at various security related topics. Check out the earlier episodes for some good explenations of ciphers, internet security, and wireless security

  • Videohelp.com - A site with loads of tutorails, how-to's and links to tools to handle almost any video manipulation need
  • VLC - A multiplatform media player that plays just about anything you can throw at it

About GeekSoc PDF Print E-mail

GeekSoc is a long running club at the University of Strathclyde that focuses on computing, the surrounding technology, and gaming.


Membership: 

Open to all with the fee of £1. Access to services however requires the reading, signing and returning of the GeekSoc Terms of Use document to the president or treasurer


Services:

GeekSoc provides several services both public and member specific. 

  • Public
    •  IRC Server
  • Membership
    • Shell Account
    • Webspaces
    • Dev Boxes
    • Mail (coming)

Public Services are able to be accessed by anyone, though are moderated, and require no membership with GeekSoc to use.

Membership Services are accessible to GeekSoc members only. This means that you must be a registered paid member, and have read and signed the TOS document found on this site.


Our Objectives:

  • To provide instruction on computing hardware, software and issues surrounding computing
  • To offer an environment where projects of a technical nature can be undertaken, if deemed feasible by the GeekSoc Administration Group
  • To facilitate video gaming on all mediums through C&L Gaming
  • To offer to other entities support of a technical nature, if deemed feasible by the GeekSoc Administration Group
  • To offer GeekSoc Members opportunities to visit/attend places/events of a technical nature
